How do you know your wall needs stone veneer work?
Some of these mean a wall is ready to cover. Others mean water is already getting behind stone, and that gets harder and costlier to fix the longer it runs.
A bare block wall out back
A gray block wall can look unfinished next to the house. If it's sound and unpainted, it's often a good base for stone, so it's worth a look.
Stones loose or falling off
A stone that rocks or drops usually means water or a weak bond behind it. Leave it and the stones around it tend to follow, along with the wall underneath.
White powder or dark stains
Chalky white streaks or dark patches on or below the stone mean water is moving through the wall. The longer it runs, the more it eats at the mortar and backing.
Cracks across joints and stones
Cracks that run through the joints and across stones often point to a wall moving behind the facing. Patching over them without finding out why just buys time.
Bottom row buried in dirt
When soil, mulch or paving covers the bottom row, water has nowhere to drain out. That trapped moisture is how stains and rot start low on the wall.
Damp spots on the inside
Damp spots or peeling paint inside a stone-faced wall mean water is getting past the stone. Catch it early and the fix stays at the wall instead of the framing.
How we handle stone veneer installation in Temecula
Stone veneer is thin natural stone or manufactured stone set onto a block, brick or framed wall, either one you already have or one we build. Stone is only as good as the wall behind it, so I check that wall first, and if it's crumbling or covered in EIFS, a foam board with a stucco-like finish, I'll tell you it isn't fit to cover, because industry guidance says manufactured stone shouldn't go over either. Most of the real work is keeping water from getting behind the stone, so we set the flashing and drainage before we lay out a single stone. Price comes down to how much wall there is, natural or manufactured stone, how much prep the wall needs and how tall and cut up it is around windows and corners, while the schedule turns on any wall repairs, permits and the weather. You get your own figure in my written estimate.
Sometimes the right wall to cover doesn't exist yet. If you want a stone-faced yard or garden wall, we can build it as one of our concrete block walls and face it once it's ready. If the stone is going on a new foundation or stem wall, that starts with foundation block wall installation, and planning the two together means the wall is built to carry the stone. When an existing wall isn't fit to cover, we can repair it first so the stone has something solid to hold onto.

Stone veneer questions we hear
Here are straight answers to what people ask us about stone veneer. If your wall doesn't fit any of them, call and ask about your own job.
Can you put stone veneer on an existing brick wall?
Yes, natural thin stone can go straight onto existing brick or block when the wall is sound, free of defects and not painted or sealed, according to natural stone industry guidance. Lighter stone, at 15 pounds per square foot or less, doesn't need a support ledge under it. If your brick is painted or sealed, I'll look at it and tell you what that means for your wall.
How much does stone veneer installation cost in Temecula?
Installing stone veneer in the Riverside area usually costs about $2,700 to $10,700 per job. Bigger or taller walls and natural stone push a job toward the top, while a sound wall that needs little prep keeps it lower. Your written estimate gives you the figure for your wall.
What causes stone veneer to fail?
Water getting in behind the stone is the most common cause of failure, according to one stone maker's guide. Industry guidance calls for flashing, weep screeds and casing beads, the metal and trim pieces that steer water back outside, at windows, doors, other openings and the bottom of the wall, so ask any installer where those go on your house. One maker also has its bottom row start a set distance above the ground, paving and flashing so it isn't sitting in water.
What is the best way to plan stone veneer work in hot weather?
Plan around hot, windy days, because industry guidance calls for shielding fresh stone work from fast drying when it's over 100°F, or over 90° with wind above 8 mph. That protection runs through the work and for 72 hours after it. When we set your start date, we'll go over the forecast with you.
Does a tall or two-story wall need special design for stone veneer?
Often it does, because one stone maker's guidelines say multi-story installations and high walls need design by a registered design professional, such as an engineer or architect. If your wall is tall, expect that design step in the plan. Send its height along with your photos so I know before I come out.
Who handles building permits for stone veneer in Temecula?
The City of Temecula Building Department handles plan check, permits and inspections in the city, working from the California Building Code and the city's own code. Before we start, we check with the department, or the county office if you're outside city limits, about your address, and when a permit's needed we pull it and line up the inspections. You can reach the department at permits@TemeculaCA.gov or 951-694-6476.
