How do you know it's time for a new fireplace?

Most people call when an old fireplace sits cold or a room never warms up. Catching chimney trouble early keeps a simple insert from turning into a rebuild.

  1. A fireplace nobody lights

The old firebox sits dark because it's smoky or a hassle. A gas insert can often put it back to work once we know the chimney behind it is sound.

  2. Cold drafts by the hearth

Air moving near a closed damper usually means it's worn or warped. Until that opening is sealed or fitted with a unit, warm air keeps slipping up the chimney.

  3. Cracked bricks or flue tiles

Cracks in the firebox or bits of tile in the ashes usually point to a damaged flue. That gets fixed or relined before a gas unit goes in.

  4. Old gas logs that won't stay lit

A pilot that keeps going out or logs that burn unevenly usually means worn parts or a tired unit. Waiting usually means more service calls on something near the end.

  5. A room that never warms up

A family room or addition that stays cold all winter often has no good heat source. Put it off, and space heaters and extension cords become the winter plan.

  6. Smoke smell or soot inside

A smoky smell after a fire or soot on the mantel usually means the chimney isn't drawing well. Keep using it that way and the staining keeps building.

How we handle fireplace installation

Most gas fireplace installation comes down to two setups. A direct-vent unit sends its exhaust out through its own pipe in a wall or the roof, so you don't need a masonry chimney, and an insert slides into your existing fireplace with a new liner run up the old chimney. Either way, if there's a chimney, we want it checked before anything new goes in, because a new unit on a bad flue just hides the problem, and I'll tell you which setup makes sense for your house and your wall. Then we prep the opening, set the vent or liner and the unit, and build the surround. The price and the schedule mostly turn on how much of that your house already has, since a sound fireplace or a simple outside wall keeps the job small while new framing, venting and a surround add cost and days, and your written estimate spells out which one you're looking at.

A fireplace usually brings some masonry with it. If you want a stone face on the wall or the surround, we do stone veneer installation as part of the same job, and if the check turns up cracked tiles or loose brick, chimney repair comes first. Outside, the same crew builds concrete block walls, which is a big part of what we're known for.

Fireplace installation questions

Here are straight answers to what people ask before a gas fireplace goes in. If your house doesn't fit neatly into one of them, call and ask about your own.

How much does it cost to install a gas fireplace in Temecula?

A gas fireplace installation across the US usually costs about $2,300 to $10,000 per job, installed, and that's the national market range, not our price. Homes that already have a fireplace, or a straightforward wall for a direct-vent unit, sit toward the lower part of it. I'll give you a free written estimate with the number for your house.

How long does gas fireplace installation take?

Most projects take one to three days, according to a national cost guide, and an insert going into a sound existing fireplace sits at the short end. New framing, venting and surround work stretch the job, so plan on more days if yours needs them.

Does my chimney need an inspection before a gas insert goes in?

Usually, yes. The Chimney Safety Institute of America, the chimney trade group, recommends a Level 2 inspection, a deeper check than a basic sweep, whenever you add a new appliance or switch to a different fuel or type, so plan on it as an early step. If it turns up damaged liner tiles or corrosion, relining or repair comes before the fireplace goes in.

Will a gas fireplace work in a power outage?

Some will. A unit with a standing pilot and a millivolt valve, which runs on the small current the pilot itself makes, keeps working with no electricity, while electronic ignition models need power, though many offer battery backup. The blower stops either way, so in an outage you get radiant heat only.

How do I get my house ready for a chimney inspection?

Clear a path to the roof access and to any attic, basement or crawl space the chimney runs through, because a Level 2 inspection covers those areas. The inspection also includes a camera scan of the inside of the chimney, so ask what the scan showed.

Can I vent a new gas fireplace into my existing chimney?

An insert can, with a new liner, but a direct-vent unit generally can't share a chimney. One vent maker's instructions say a direct-vent unit has to vent straight outside on its own separate system and can't connect to a chimney serving a wood-burning or other gas appliance. We follow the instructions for whatever unit you pick.
